Natural Remedies for Hebreden's Nodes

on Sep 23, 2023| Modified on Mar 08, 2024

Heberden's nodes are bony swellings that form at the distal (farthest) interphalangeal joints of the fingers, typically the last joint near the fingertip. They emerge due to osteoarthritis and signify long-term wear and tear of the joints.

While they can be unsightly and sometimes painful, the presence of Heberden's nodes does not indicate a severe health risk. Nevertheless, they can be a source of discomfort, making it important to explore possible natural remedies.

Supplements for Heberden's Nodes

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Often recommended for osteoarthritis, these compounds can help repair cartilage and reduce the pain associated with Heberden's nodes.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Found in fish oil and flaxseed oil, omega-3s are known to reduce inflammation, which might be beneficial in alleviating pain from Heberden's nodes.

Turmeric and Curcumin

Turmeric contains an active compound called curcumin, which possesses anti-inflammatory properties. This can be consumed as a spice or taken as a supplement.

Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, green tea is said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Regular consumption might assist in reducing symptoms.

Natural Remedies for Heberden's Nodes

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV is a popular home remedy for a myriad of health issues. For Heberden's nodes, some believe that its anti-inflammatory properties can help. Mix equal parts ACV and water and apply to the affected area using a cloth. Another method is to mix a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of water and drink daily.

Epsom Salt Baths

The magnesium sulfate in Epsom salt can reduce pain and inflammation. Dissolve a handful of Epsom salt in warm water and soak the affected fingers for about 15 minutes.

Aloe Vera

This plant has anti-inflammatory properties and can be applied topically. It soothes and reduces pain, making it a natural choice for many with joint pain.

Ginger

Renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can be incorporated into one's diet or applied as a paste (mixing ginger powder with a little water) on the affected area.

I have three fingers affected by Hebreden's nodes. They are essentially bone spurs on the top joints of the fingers. The only solution I have found is taking a daily vitamin K2 capsule every night. They are greatly reduced now. From what I understand, the K2 redistributes calcium from the soft tissues where it is not supposed to be to the bones where it belongs. I think this would also hold true for calcified blood vessels too.

Thank you for this, jholl. I will try it. Could you tell me how much mcg is in the capsule you take, please.

Hello jholl! I'm very excited to see your post! I have Heberden's nodes that are growing fast, are ugly and hurt. I have been taking Vitamin K2 (MK-7) 120mcg per day for many months but it hasn't helped.

If you can please share:

- the dosage you took

- when you say 'greatly reduced' do you mean that the actual bumps have reduced in size?

Can't wait to hear from you! Thank you!

Yes the bumps are now much smaller. I have read to take it with vitamin D3. I have used life extension brand called super k for most of the time I have taken it. Boron can also play a part in this I think. I take a supplement called triple boron complex by Swanson. You can also just take regular borax by 20 mule team borax using about 1/4 teaspoon or so. I think the K2 is by far the most important. The goal is to move the calcium out of the soft tissue and back into the bones where it needs to be. Calcium can deposit in the arteries and veins too, so it may be connected to atherosclerosis as well. I am not a doctor, but it seems likely to me. Another thought might be trying serrapeptase and/or nattokinase. Another might be chanca piedra. I have taken all of these in various combinations and times depending on the current health issue. We are all different, so it is difficult to pinpoint what helps. I am just hoping we can all help each other to find our own solutions. Best wishes to you!
